Hosted at the exclusive London night spot in Leicester Square (the Equinox Club) Warwick Bloomfield fulfilled the Challenge of a lifetime by donating (and after a eight week training preparation fighting) the former WBC and WBO Super Middleweight Champion of the World Nigel Benn.
The one three minute round was donated by Nigel Benn to raise money for Capital Radio’s Help a London Child as well as the Rainbow Trust Children’s Charity. Bloomfield a 42-year-old father of three paid a total of nearly £4000 for the fight in donations.
At a star packed event including guests from both Radio and Television, Warwick’s fight being one of a ‘Great Fight Out’ as it was billed. Cathy ‘the bitch’ Brown the current WBF Champion lost in a points decision against WIBF Title holder Alina Shaternikova (Ukraine) for the WBF/WIBF European Flyweight Title.
After the customary ‘fighting talk’ from both camps Ian Gauldie the Senior Instructor of Combat Academy UK and former WUMA Self Defence World Champion lead his confident and conditioned fighter into the ring. Bloomfield had been described as a ‘worthy exponent of the ring’ by Paul Kinsey the Chief Executive and host of the event from the First Leisure Corporation.
The crowed offered an encouraging applause to the brave fighter and, in respectful expectation, erupted to their feet as the deafening sound of the all too familiar Big Ben bells began to chime.
Benn sporting the familiar black attire ran his way to the ring as looked as conditioned and every bit the warrior of British boxing history he had ever been. Roy Frances who had officially retired after the Tyson v Julius Francis fight had kindly offered his services, and with one more bell, the fight was on.
Bloomfield’s martial art experience came to command as he put a respectful and spirited fight up to the Darkest of Destroyers. Later, as the televised fight was shown on channel 5 Gauldie is heard shouting from the edge ‘throw the Jab’ and Benns one time adversary Steve Collins was heard to echo ‘ move around’ and jab and move he did.
During the three-minute round we saw more than just flashes of Benns unique boxing style that kept him at the top for so long.
